SANKOFA MARKETPLACE HIGHLIGHTS
YOUTH 2009 SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 2009 IN LOWER 9TH WARD This Month’s Theme: “Strong Children Build Strong Communities” Sankofa Marketplace, a project of the Historic Lower 9th Ward Council for Arts and Sustainability, will hold its monthly community market place highlighting the youth in our community in the New Orleans area on Saturday, April 11th at the corner of Caffin and St. Claude from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Come to the Sankofa Marketplace to see enriching creative musical performances by the young people in our community and to participate in the special activities designed for children at our Youth Tent. The highlight of the day will be a special performance by the Avant Garde Jazz Ensemble at 2pm. The April 11 Sankofa Marketplace features: • Creative performances by our youth such as: o The Young Marines of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office o St. Augustine High School Marching Band o St. Mary’s High School Cheerleaders o Ambassadors for Christ • Farmers Market with fresh vegetables and wild caught Louisiana shrimp • Ready to eat food: o Fresh grilled shrimp and vegetables by Chef Coy LeBeau o Baked goods and homemade fruit teas o Red beans and rice, gumbo, vegetarian pasta by Daniel’s on the Bayou • Health and Wellness Tent with free onsite blood pressure screenings, HIV resource information, and nutritional food information. • Coffee bar provided by Baby’s Coffee • Model Car Giveaways for children provided by Stanley’s Custom Service Shop and Lower 9th Ward entrepreneurs • Youth Tent Activities Activities at the Youth Tent include: Ceramic flower making celebrating spring Papier Mache Easter Eggs Face Painting by Sojourner Truth High School Students Drawing class by Lusher High School Students & Sankofa Youth Artwork Collage Writing for the Sankofa Marketplace Youth Newsletter Pitching contest honoring Jackie Robinson Day Jackie Robinson born, April 11, 1947, was the first African American in modern major league baseball. April 11th Marketplace live music schedule: 10:30 a.m. Young Marines of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff’s Office 11:00 a.m. St. Augustine High School Marching Band & St. Mary’s High School Cheerleaders 1:00 p.m. Ambassadors of Christ 2:00 p.m. Avant Garde Jazz Band A raffle offering a fresh produce basket and exquisite handmade artwork will be held at the end of the day to benefit Frederick Douglass High School. The Sankofa Marketplace is a free, open-air event held at the corner of Caffin and St. Claude every second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can look forward to purchasing fresh produce and Louisiana wild caught shrimp. Access to community resources and information is available at each market, as well as art work from local artists and craftspeople.
