Annual Family Day Celebration
Annual Family Day Celebration Explores Local Traditions of Brass Bands, Second Lines, and Mardi Gras Indians Free family event features music and children's activities WHAT: Family Day at The Collection presented in conjunction with the exhibition In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith from The Historic New Orleans Collection WHEN: Sunday, May 17, 2009 12:30-4:00 p.m. WHERE: 500 Block of Royal Street, French Quarter 520 &533 Royal Street HOW: Family Day is free and open to the public. Activities include: · Music by the Treme Brass Band · Children's entertainer and storyteller Papillion · Gallery presentations by Larry Bannock (Big Chief of the Golden Star Hunters) and Leslie Smith (musician/songwriter and daughter of the artist Michael P. Smith) · Arts and crafts projects · Photo opportunities WHY: The Historic New Orleans Collection's annual Family Day is designed for guests of all ages to celebrate New Orleans history and culture in a fun, friendly, and educational environment. This year's program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition In the Spirit: The Photography of Michael P. Smith from The Historic New Orleans Collection, which includes more than 80 photographs of the city's second lines, Mardi Gras Indians, social aid and pleasure clubs, and more. Family Day will feature music by the Treme Brass Band and children's entertainer Papillion. Children will be able to create their own second line regalia and have their pictures taken. Mardi Gras Indian Larry Bannock (Big Chief of the Golden Star Hunters) and Leslie Smith, musician/songwriter and daughter of the artist Michael P.
