WPA Guide Release Party at FAB - Faubourg Marigny Art & Books
On Sunday, March 29th from 5:00 to 7:00pm, FAB - Faubourg Marigny Art & Books (600 Frenchmen St) is throwing a party to celebrate the republication of the 1938 New Orleans City Guide by the Works Progress Administration. Garrett County Press is republishing the mammoth survey with new a typeset, using original photos unearthed at the Louisiana State Library (91 black and white photos total). Over 54 sections in 455 pages cover everything from churches to prostitution. Previous reprints were merely scans of the first 1938 edition. Tulane historian and author Lawrence N. Powell, provides a new introduction. "You need only thumb through the New Orleans volume," Powell writes, "to understand the critical acclaim. Its pages crackle with the nervous energy of good writing ? You can still follow one of its recommended automobile tours and not feel so much as three minutes behind the times." Scheduled to coincide with the popular Nickel-A-Dance event featuring Lionel Ferbos at Snug Harbor (up the block from Faubourg Marigny Art & Books), the launch party will offer a special discount on the cover price, music and wine. Garrett County Press publishes books about New Orleans, underground culture and music. For more information, please visit: www.gcpress.com. FAB - Faubourg Marigny Art & Books is located at 600 Frenchmen Street at the corner of Chartres Street, just 8 blocks downriver from Jackson Square. FAB is open everyday from Noon till 10 PM and is celebrating 32 years of continuous service for residents and visitors of the Crescent City.
